The history of bamboo flute dates back to the Han dynasty (206BC-AD220) in China, the most distinguishing characteristic of which is the presence of a mirliton, a small piece of tissue-like paper from the inner section of a piece of bamboo glued over the hole between the blow-hole and the top finger-hole. When the flute is played this membrane vibrates and makes the tone more nasal in guality.
