Shi-Yeon Sung

Shi-Yeon Sung, born in 1975 in Pusan, South Korea, began playing the piano at the age of 4. She took part in many youth competitions, winning various prizes.

She gave her first solo evening at the age of 13.

She began studies under Eckart Heiligers in Zurich and then under Laszlo Simon and Erich Andreas at the UDK (University of the Arts in Berlin).

Shi-Yeon Sung participated in numerous master classes, for example with Dietrich Fischer- Dieskau and Sergej Dorensky.

Since 2001, she has undertaken Kapellmeister and orchestral conducting studies with Prof. Rolf Reuter at the Hanns Eisler School of Music.

In 2002, she gave her conducting debut with the opera "Die Zauberflöte" by Mozart in Berlin. Following this, she has assisted at the Theater Görlitz, Hans Otto Theater in Potsdam, and has directed many opera projects. From February 2003 to February 2006, Shi-Yeon Sung was chief conductor of the Capella Academica, the symphony orchestra of the Humboldt University Berlin.

In January 2004, she won a conducting competition to become grant recipient at the Conducting Forum of the German Music Council. In July 2004, she won the third female conductors’ competition in Solingen.

As permanent guest conductor, she directs the opening concert of the Summer Festival Kapfenburg (supported by DaimlerChrysler).

Collaboration with the Berliner Sinfonie-Orchester, the Berliner Symphoniker, the Nürnberger Symphoniker, the Bergischen Symphoniker, the Thüringische Philharmonie Gotha-Suhl, the Philharmonie Südwestfalen, the Landesorchester Nordrhein-Westfalen, the Neubrandenburger Philharmonie and the Brandenburger Symphoniker.
